Detecting Crop Weeds from Space

Alice Butler (Precision Agronomist)

  • Spot spraying summer weeds identified by satellite imagery produced a typical chemical saving of 75% to 85%, but this was paddock specific.

  • Utilising satellite imagery to produce spray maps requires no additional hardware, unlike the WEED-IT or WeedSeeker systems.

  • Challenges for WA are identifying stressed weeds as WA summers are usually hot and dry.

In the last two years, the number of satellites orbiting earth has doubled and some of these have the capability to capture much higher resolution imagery. This presents a wider opportunity for the use of satellite imagery in agriculture, with the potential to identify weeds.

Chinese Commodity Demand Growth

Mae Connelly (Grain Marketing Consultant)

  • China’s ageing population and slower economy will reduce future demand for imported grains and feed.

  • Chinese soybean imports have surged, but future growth may moderate as protein consumption slows.

  • Two GDP growth scenarios project slower increases in animal protein demand by 2045.

  • Australian growers should expect slower demand growth from China but opportunities in premium markets.

2024 AGIC grain industry conference was one on “Long-Term Outlook on China’s Feed Demand - Changing demographics and slowing economy” by Vladimir Zinkovski, Principal Agricultural Economist at S&P Global.

This article explores the main messages from his presentation.
